When it comes to owning a rabbit, knowing what to feed them is very important. Many people struggle with the concept of what to feed their rabbits. Do you go down the route of leafy greens and other vegetables? What about fruits? There are many questions to answer. One of the most common queries we see, though, revolves around rabbits and some popular fruits. For example, can rabbits eat bananas?
Bananas are a hugely enjoyable and wholesome fruit to eat. They are hugely enjoyable, and for many people, they make the perfect food to snack on. Rich in potassium and other goodness, bananas are a great source of energy. Yet, like many fruits and foods that humans consume easily, it might not be the best choice for a pet. In the case of your rabbit, then, can they eat bananas?
Can rabbits eat bananas?
Yes, they can!
This is the simplest way that we can put this. Like most other fruits and vegetables in this world, your rabbit should have no problem enjoying gorging on a banana. You can feed your rabbit bananas that have been peeled, and they will also eat the peels at the same time. However, just make sure you wash out those peels first – some have lingering pesticides and others on them, and this could have some health issues for your little bunny rabbit.
The secret to getting your rabbit to eat bananas is to simply add them into their diet. However, you should try and work out how much banana your rabbit can actually eat.
How much banana can I feed my rabbit?
If, like many other rabbit owners, you choose to give them some bananas, you should try and work out the right formula. Typically, we think that the right amount of bananas can be broken down into a simple equation. For every five pounds of body weight your rabbit carries, you could give them around two tablespoons of fruit – including banana.
Why do we make this limit? Because you do not want to give your rabbit an excess of blood sugar-raising foods. This could cause serious issues including leading to serious problems like diabetes and obesity. For that reason, you should be very careful about just leaving your rabbit with a full banana to chew through. The problem is also that rabbits will just keep on eating – they enjoy bananas so much that without your input they might not stop.
Bananas are a rich source of natural sugars, so make sure you are very particular about how much of the stuff your rabbit actually gets to eat. Start off by giving them a tiny piece of banana, and see how they react. While they are safe for a rabbit to eat, there is always a small chance that your rabbit has some form of allergy.
So, the secret is to get them a small amount of banana and see how they react. If you notice any kind of negative reactions, it could be caused by the presence of the banana in their system.
Simple steps to getting your bunny to eat a banana
The first thing that we recommend you do at this point is to make sure you start with the small amount s we recommended above. Since rabbits will eat fruit and vegetables with ease and joy, they are not meant to be their primary dietary food. Instead, grass or hay is the staple of their diet. Vegetables and fruits are a treat – give them too much of this and it can become problematic down the line.
So, make sure they are eating lots of grass and/or hay and then throw in some small pieces of fruit or veg. Stick to the above quantities per their body weight, and see how that helps them to grow and enjoy themselves. You should, though, make sure that you always take it in small steps. Experiment slowly – if you are feeding your rabbit a new fruit, like a banana, only feed them that one particular fruit.
Many rabbit owners make the mistake of giving their rabbits 3-to 4 different new foods at once. This can make it hard to tell what, if any, causes a negative reaction in your little rabbit. Keep an eye on what they eat, make sure they eat it in small portions and keep an eye on the way they progress. Give them a day or two, as well – negative reactions are not always seen right away.
Also, make sure that any banana is washed with thoroughness and care before you even think about giving it to your rabbit. This is essential in making sure they do not start to feel any needless negative effects from eating banana. Again, some have pesticides and other treatments used.
What about baby rabbits? Can baby rabbits eat bananas?
If you have a precious little baby rabbit, then you naturally might have a lot to think about when it comes to what you feed them. Just as you cannot feed a baby child the same food as an adult, you cannot feed a baby rabbit the same way you would an adult rabbit. So, can baby rabbits eat banana? No.
We do not recommend it. It is simply too risky for their young bodies to be able to take such a change to their diet. We recommend that you wait at least four months before you think about feeding a rabbit a form of a banana. Take your time – there is no need to rush or force anything here.
Can my rabbit eat banana peel?
As we mentioned above, yes you can feed your banana some banana peel if you so choose. However, make sure you give it a thorough wash and cleanse beforehand. However, please note that banana peel is not a substitute for an actual banana. The taste is nowhere near as enjoyable, and the level of nutrition in a banana peel is questionable to say the least.
You should not bother feeding your rabbit banana peel if it can already get enough of the actual fruit in the first place. If you do decide to feed them banana peel, make sure it is diced up into tiny pieces. And do not take your eyes off your bunny as it eats the peel; there is always the chance that they could choke on the peel or similar.
So, try and keep this in mind and make sure that you focus heavily on the way they eat the peel. While they can eat it, it’s nowhere near as nutritious or enjoyable as an actual banana.
What happens if my rabbit eats an excess of bananas?
If you worry that your little rabbit has gone a bit too far in their enjoyment of a banana, you should keep an eye on the issues that form.
The first and most serious issue, though, is the fact that they have taken in so much sugar. A banana can contain around 14g, or more if they are larger, of sugar. That is a lot of sugar. It could cause a major spike in their blood sugar levels. And all of that extra sugar is likely to cause weight issues down the line, too. Make sure that your little bunny is kept very much away from a full banana. Again, two tablespoons per 5lbs of body weight should be the starting point for feeding them bananas.
Anything over this and you run the risk of giving them too much, too soon. This could cause some problems that might include weight gain, diabetes, and blood sugar spikes that can cause some quality of life problems. You should also avoid the excess amount of banana because it is a rich source of starch. Excessive amounts of starch can be problematic for a bunny, too, so try and keep that in mind when it comes to feeding your bunny rabbit.
Too much starch can cause intestinal discomfort and even damage their intestines. As you can imagine, then, you want to be as careful as you possibly can when it comes to dealing with their innards. So, make sure you give your rabbit bananas in small quantities and in very limited periods. Some people give their rabbit bananas daily; we recommend you avoid that. Instead, try and stick to a more moderate return instead of going all-out for bananas as a regular treat.
Can rabbits eat bananas? Yes, but with a limited quantity
So, as you can see, feeding your rabbit some bananas is something that has to be done with moderation. You cannot do this to excess, as you run the risk of making your rabbit sick, overweight, or both. As such, you should spend some time looking closely at their lifestyle and making sure you feed them bananas as a specific treat or reward. If your rabbit has come through something that deserves praise or sympathy, a tiny bit of banana should help cheer them up.
Just as with any other fruit or vegetable for a rabbit, moderation is the essential choice. Keep that in mind when making a decision and you can quickly and easily make sure your rabbit enjoys banana without the risk.
