If you like the idea of having a fish as your pet, then you might want to focus on going for a name that feels suitable. Fish names can be hard to come up with on your own, such as the sheer variety of options out there. Some people go for something obvious, such as Nemo. Others go for a human name, but calling your fish Tom might seem a bit, well, odd!
Whatever you decide, though, there are some names you might choose to go for as a little joke. Out of all of the various funny fish names, though, where do you start? Let us give you some tips.
Finding the best funny fish names
The secret to choosing a funny fish name is to look at the personality of your fish. Really, most people will look for something that makes them laugh. If your fish seems to spend a lot of time doing one particular motion, you could choose that as their name. For example, some fish might seem to spend all of their time hiding – why not go for something funny yet ironic, like Courage?
The name of your fish is something that you need to really look into and try to understand. Look into the breed itself and find out its leading characteristics. Then, see if your fish lives up to that particular name. Sometimes, though, the best names that you might come up with for your fish might be a bit more ironic. For example, we knew someone who went with Chomper for their fish. Why? Because they seemed to spend their time eating and chomping down on any other fish they came into contact with!
This was out of sync with their breed, so it made a name that felt funny and somewhat typical. The secret to a good fish name, then, is to try and find something that makes you laugh. You want to find something that you think of and chuckle. When you tell someone else the name of your fish, you want their reaction to being one of laughter – so, try and focus on that when it comes to choosing fish names.
The secret, though, we believe, is to simply look for something that feels like a good fit with their personality. What is their main attribute or trait? Does it work as a name?
Look to their color scheme, too
Sometimes, the easiest way to come up with a name for your fish is to look at their color scheme. For example, if your fish is quite multicolored then you could go for something simple like Rainbow. Or, something a bit more dramatic like Skittles – you know, like the candy that is the color of the rainbow?
You have many, many ways to come up with a comical little name that will reflect kindly on your fish. The color scheme is probably one of the best places we can think of, though.
What about popular culture?
You might also find some great ideas from popular culture. For kids, it is especially common to have their pet fish named after something like a Pokémon. For reference, you could go for one of the classic options like Goldeen. Or, if you have a fish that is a bit bigger than you would expect, go for something tongue-in-cheek like Gyarados!
You can find many ways to use a comedy pop culture reference in the name of your fish. The best funny fish names have something that will make people look at you like you are rather odd!
Work out their gender, though
It is common for people to buy a fish and not really pay attention to their gender. However, calling your fish something that feels like it is fit for a guy would seem a bit odd if they are actually female.
For example, some fish have kind of tiger-like prints and designs on their outer bodies. Someone we know went for Tony, as in the Tony the Tiger mascot for the cereal brand Frosties. We found that really funny, but at the same time when it turned out that ‘Tony’ was actually a female, it was even funnier.
Look for a pun or a play on words
We also find that one of the best places to start would be to go down the route of some kind of pun-inspired. For example, you could go for something classic like Tank Sinatra. Or Gill Clinton. You have quite a few options; you just need to really think of a celebrity or something otherwise famous and add a fish-inspired pun.
Of course, make sure you run it past someone first before declaring your funny fish name. There is nothing worse than coming up with something ‘hilarious’ that nobody else actually finds funny!
Most of all, though, find something fitting
One good way to come up with a new name for your fish is to think about how you were brought together. You could name them after the place you bought them, or even something along those lines. Basically, try and come up with something that has some kind of meaningful symbolism. You should look for something that makes you immediately think ‘yeah, that’s exactly what they should be called’ – though this is obviously easier said than done.
The main thing that we think you should do, though, is to focus on finding a funny fish name that suits their look. For example, you could go for something like Manchu if you find out they have whiskers, as some fish breeds do. You should keep an eye out for something that is going to relate to their look, their style, or their personality. Or, failing that, something that reminds you of how you come across getting that fish into your life in the first place.
There are of course many funny fish names that you could get inspired by, but we think the above options make a pretty compelling place to start. Instead of just giving you names, we have tried to inspire your decision. Which of the funny fish names that come to your mind, then, do you think will be well-received?
